Heritage Tiling’s work is about restoring Victorian encaustic & geometric tiled floors and other historic tiled floors, I also install Victorian reproduction tiled floors and design and fit bespoke tile schemes such as cut-tile murals and mosaics.
My work takes me all over the UK and I have worked extensively in Europe plus work in the States, and as far away as New Zealand.
I started my Co in 1982 and have always been involved in the restoration of Victorian tiled floors they are very widespread due to the massive empire the Victorian had however very few people have an interest in becoming trained to restore this fascinating branch of tiling.
I enjoy laying a new complicated floor and seeing the joy on the clients face when they see the completed floor! It makes the job & the aches & pains from kneeling for hours per day well worth it.
My work is very specialised and as yet there isn’t a proper classification for my skill set which to be fair I have more or less invented as the original Victorian tilers did not restore floors they laid them, my finished work looks very traditional but getting to the end result is because of hard work and use of technology as & when it became useful.
I have had a website since the early 90’s as a result of a collaboration with Liverpool Uni and Hewlett –Packard and I have re-developed the website many times, I now self-host and run the site myself.
I offer training to tilers or other people interested in my work and I belong to a group called Heritage Skills Hub, the group is committed to getting all Heritage skills set up and funded for training, a hard struggle at present.
Heritage tiling is also involved in the cleaning & sealing of existing floors historic or not in a bid to keep floors in use rather than skip them as often floors that have had carpets or vinyl covering can be cleaned up more or less as good as new.
