NHBC Tanking Requirements
BAL has an approved EAD-certified tanking system that meets new NHBC tanking requirements for bathrooms, showers and wetrooms in new build homes.

What is the new NHBC standards for tanking behind tiles?
The new NHBC standard for bathrooms, showers and wet rooms means that any new house in the UK that is built (foundations laid from 1st January 2025) will require tiling in wet areas to be tanked with an EAD-certified system to receive warranty and insurance, if they are tiling:
1. Shower over bath OR shower with shower tray, with standard flow rate <12 litres/min – WHEN the substrate manufacturer’s guidance advises a tanking system is still required, or has not passed NHBC Table 2 assessment requirements.
2. ANY shower over bath OR shower with shower tray, with a flow rate >12 litres/min.
3. ANY wet room (fully tiled wall and floor, shower area).
What systems do BAL have that are EAD-certified?

BAL Waterproof 1C is certified with ETA-24/1129 to EAD 030352-00-0503: Liquid applied watertight covering kit for wet room floors and/or walls as stipulated by the NHBC.
In some areas – such as around pipework, junctions and drains, and where tiling direct to wetroom floors – some additional ancillaries are required including:
BAL Waterproof 1C Tape
BAL Waterproof 1C Matting
BAL Universal Adhesive & Sealant
BAL Primer 1C on certain porous background
EAD certification also requires the use of specific approved tile adhesives with each approved EAD waterproofing system. BAL has multiple option from our existing core range of adhesives that can be used with BAL Waterproof 1C.
For tanking outside of NHBC installations, BAL Waterproof 1C can be used as prior (no need for additional tapes or matting).
