ARDEX Group UK shortlisted for prestigious industry awards

The ARDEX Group UK – a market-leading manufacturer and supplier of specialist building materials for flooring and tiling industry – has been shortlisted in 5 categories at the first-ever BASA Awards (British Association of Sealants and Adhesives).

BASA is the voice of the entire adhesives and sealants industries in the UK, through the provision of legislative guidance, best practice and support services for its members which include ARDEX UK and Building Adhesives.

The Awards Gala is taking place on 22nd November at East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham, with the judging panel consisting of a team of senior industry professionals, a representative from the sponsor and a past BASA chair.

The ARDEX Group UK has been shortlisted for the following categories:

  • Best Product Packaging for BAL Micromax3 ECO Grout

BAL Micromax3 ECO is designed in high-impact, retail-aesthetic packaging which shows the true colour of the grout through transparent bags. This allows retail customers and end-users to see the actual colour of the grout and also how – unlike competitor’s products – pigmented fillers are fully “locked” into the grout mix. As well as being visually appealing with a high on-shelf impact  – promoted also on branded bespoke stands – the product packaging is 100% recyclable.

  • Environment & Sustainability Initiative for Building Tomorrow with the ARDEX Group

The ARDEX Group’s “Building Tomorrow” programme is a series of initiatives designed to reduce the company’s CO2 emissions with a goal of being fully Carbon Neutral by 2045 and being Carbon Neutral for Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030. The Group has a core objective to reduce its impact on the environment in an evolving market-place through sustainable sourcing of materials, recycling, and waste reduction.

  • Innovation for GivBax Rewards loyalty app

  • Marketing Campaign for the GivBax Rewards launch

The ARDEX Group UK have been shortlisted for their high-impact omni-channel marketing campaign launching GivBax Rewards. ARDEX decided to launch GivBax Rewards as a “stand-alone” brand – similar to other App-based loyalty programmes such as Nectar or ClubCard. It utilised a colourful and highly visually geometric theme – focusing on the core benefits of the App – whereby you can get Cash directly into your hand, simply by scanning any ARDEX or BAL product receipt.

ARDEX Group UK Invests in Sustainable Energy

The ARDEX Group UK has commissioned more than 1600 solar panels at its manufacturing facilities in Stoke-on-Trent and Haverhill.

The high-performance photovoltaic (PV) systems have been installed on warehousing and manufacturing units at both sites and will generate approximately 30% of the ARDEX Group UK’s electrical power requirements.

The installation of solar panels is part of a global sustainability initiative in which the company is investing around 3 million euros globally.

Installation of 1332 panels were completed at ARDEX UK in Haverhill in September last year and since commissioning, more than 269,686 kWh of solar energy has been produced – equivalent to the consumption of 100 houses.

A more modest 334 panels were installed at the Group’s Stoke-on-Trent facility – Building Adhesives Ltd in Trentham – with commissioning completing in March this year. This is due to limitations for more panels from the local grid, however plans remain to invest in more panels at Building Adhesives Ltd once the local grid has been updated and allows this to be done.

Since March 50,080 kWh of electricity has been produced – which is the equivalent of taking 9,814.4 kg CO2 out of the atmosphere or planting 594 trees. It meets 14% of total energy needs at Building Adhesives.

David Hackett, Managing Director of the ARDEX Group UK, said: “The installation of solar panels at our two UK manufacturing plants is an important part of our overall commitment to improve our sustainability performance in the UK.

“This has included ensuring our electricity is generated by renewable sources, increasingly adopting LED lighting throughout the facilities (100% completion in 2023), using battery-powered FLT’s (100% completion in 2023) and maximising the use of post-consumer waste in our packaging.

“We continue to look for sustainable solutions to meet our business requirements as we aim to be Carbon Neutral for our Scope-1 & 2 impacts by 2030.

“In addition, the installation of the panels makes us a bit more independent from current energy prices and possible energy shortages.”

 

BAL launches new grout-effect sealant

BAL have launched a new innovative “Grout-Effect Sealant” for seamless transitions.

BAL Micromax Grout-Effect Sealant is formulated with a unique technology which provides a textured, matt-finish that blends perfectly with your grout – no more shiny, stand-out high gloss sealant!

Colour-matched to BAL Micromax3 ECO Grouts, it provides a uniform finish in colour AND texture, across all joints; whether they are grouted tile joints, sealed perimeter joints, movement joints or internal corners.

Fundraising challenge reaches final conclusion!

A 25,000-mile fundraising challenge raising money for the Dougie Mac is reaching the finish line – with fundraisers calling on people to support them for one Last Mile!

Since last year, colleagues from Building Adhesives Ltd in Trentham have been taking part in “Journey Around The Worrall”, in memory of a colleague who passed away from cancer, by walking, running, swimming, cycling or even rowing to complete 25,000 miles; equivalent to travelling around the world across the equator.

The challenge is being completed in remembrance of Avrill Worrall – a key member of the R&D and Quality team and indeed wider company for Building Adhesives Ltd / ARDEX UK more than 21 years who is sadly missed by her many friends and colleagues at the company.

Joe Myatt-Winterton, QC Controller, decided to organise a fundraising challenge in aid of Douglas Macmillan hospice – the Worrall family’s nominated charity who did so much to support Avril during her fight.

On Tuesday 21st May – which also happens to be Avril’s birthday – the team are completing the challenge at Longton Park and are inviting supporters to join them for one last mile.

The Sponsored Walk will start at 1pm, with each participant invited to donate £2 to boost the fundraising pot which currently stands at £1100.

Joe said: “We are approaching the finish line of our 25,000 mile challenge in memory of Avril and to mark this great milestone we’d love everyone to join us for a finale walk around Longton Park on the Tuesday 21st May, which was Avril’s birthday.

“While it has been extremely challenging, it’s also brought us closer together as a team as well as providing happiness and support to each other – something that Avril always did for those around her.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported the challenge so far, and it would be great to see as many people as possible for one last mile!”

The team – which has included colleagues and their friends and family – have reached the milestone by completing numerous challenges such as running the Potter’s ‘Arf, cycling the Manifold Trail, and walking the Roaches as well as lots of walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking and even a bit of pedalo peddling!

BAL completes successful Environmental Audit

Building Adhesives Ltd – the market-leader in full tiling solutions – have successfully completed a recertification audit for the ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) standard carried out by independent certification body BSI (British Standards Institution).

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognized standard for environmental management systems (EMS). It allows businesses to benchmark their current environmental performance and sets out ways to improve it.

The framework encompasses various aspects, from resource usage and waste management to energy use, transport planning, materials reuse and renewable energy generation. It also looks at how businesses are monitoring environmental performance and involving stakeholders in environmental commitments.

The audit process took place over 2 days and reconfirmed that Building Adhesives are meeting the standard which they first achieved in 2003.

Clare Brosnan, Safety and Systems Manager at Building Adhesives, said: “The audit reviewed the whole of the process and systems regarding environmental management, as well as investigating the businesses commitment to continual improvement.

“We did not receive any non-conformances and successfully retained our accreditation for a further 3 years. Thank you to all who supported and contributed to the process across numerous departments.

“We can now look forward to six monthly surveillance visits to ensure compliance with the standard.”

“Buggingham Pallets” welcomes new insect arrivals

Staff at Building Adhesives Ltd in Stoke-on-Trent have all mucked-in to construct an insect hotel just outside of the reception area of their HQ in Trentham.

“Buggingham Pallets” has been constructed out of six old wooden pallets filled with natural material such as leaves, twigs, bamboo cane, cardboard and more.

The hotel gives insects and other mini-beasts a place to shelter during the winter or periods of extreme weather. They can also use it to hide from predators or raise their young.

David Hackett, Managing Director at Building Adhesives Ltd and ARDEX UK, said: “The construction of the insect hotel is a small part of our concerted effort to improve the sustainability of our sites, and to make them more biodiverse for us all to enjoy.

“It was especially encouraging to see many people from various parts of the business “muck in” and contribute to the site voluntarily.

“We hope this will go a small way to improving our site for nature and be a symbol for what we hope to continue to achieve in the future.

“Special thanks to Research Chemist Angela Starling and Joe Myatt-Winterton, QC Controller who organised the project and all those who helped with its construction.”

Improvements to biodiversity at Building Adhesives and ARDEX UK form a key part of the ARDEX Group UK sustainability objectives.

The group, through its UK brands including BAL and ARDEX, has a core objective to reduce its impact on the environment in an evolving market-place through sustainable sourcing of materials, recycling, and waste reduction.

Ultimately, the group’s aim is to be Carbon Neutral by 2040 through a series of initiatives (Carbon Neutral for Scope-1 & 2 by 2030).

A number of initiatives have already been introduced including; energy efficient LED lighting installed in all warehouses, installation of solar panels for electricity generations, phasing out diesel forklifts for a full EV fleet, increasing the use of recycled raw materials, reducing lifetime build costs due to longer guaranteed product lifetimes and reducing the use of “virgin” plastic in its products through the use of PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastics.

In addition to its in-house sustainability program, the UK group also supports external environmental groups with BAL’s charitable partnership with Cool Earth – a charity which works alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation and its impacts on climate change.

Passing on the BAL and ARDEX baton

After more than 20 years with ARDEX and over 10 years with BAL, Peter Bell, Managing Director, is passing on the baton to his deputy, David Hackett.

Peter has enjoyed a stellar career with the ARDEX Group underpinned by his leadership of ARDEX and BAL, two highly successful, market-leading UK businesses.  Testament to his commitment and legacy, Peter also holds a group steering position as an ARDEX Global Management Committee member as well as roles on various group boards, including India, Ireland, and the Middle East.  He will retain these roles until the end of 2023.

As from 1st July 2023, David Hackett will take on the position of UK Managing Director.

Born in Sydney Australia, David’s career with the ARDEX Group began after the acquisition of Australian Building Adhesives (ABA) along with its sister company Building Adhesives Ltd (BAL) in 2001.

Moving to Europe in 2007, David completed MBA studies in international business throughout several countries including Russia, United States, China, India, Romania, and Austria.

David’s career path took him to ARDEX Head Office in Germany where he took on Corporate Unit responsibility of Global Marketing for the ARDEX Group.  Working on global brand strategy and the introduction of the ARDEX Academy concept around the world were highlights of this time.

In 2011, David’s next challenge saw him move to BAL in Stoke-on-Trent where he took on the role of Sales & Marketing Director.  “Customer First”, innovation and product development are central to David’s business ethos and the success of BAL Micromax 2 , BAL White Star Plus, BAL Rapid-Flex One and BAL Level Max are testimony to his efforts.

In 2016, David became General Manager at Building Adhesives, overseeing all functions in the Stoke business.  Alongside his peers in the UK Leadership Team, David has successfully steered the BAL ship for the last six years.  The alignment of the ARDEX and BAL Commercial Teams in 2021 has paved the way for a more potent market reach model, and further consolidates the UK management “One-Team” approach.

As commented by Peter Bell: “David’s promotion to UK Managing Director is a great example of how the ARDEX group opens development pathways for its key people.  It also demonstrates how we promote from within, and how we encourage people to take on international assignments to open up career progression opportunities.

His commitment to our people, our customers and our strategic vision make him a great choice to lead our talented team into the future. David Hackett’s appointment as Managing Director represents a natural progression in his career.  He brings a wealth of experience including tile retailing in Australia, Corporate marketing roles in Germany and manufacturing expertise in the UK along with Board member responsibilities with the UK Tile Association (TTA).  Add to this his dedication to firm growth by delivering on the ARDEX and BAL commitment to its people, customers, and community.

Peter Bell will continue with his ARDEX Group responsibilities throughout the remainder of 2023.

Journey Around the Worrall

Colleagues at Stoke-on-Trent building products manufacturer Building Adhesives Ltd (part of ARDEX Group), are taking on a mammoth 25,000-mile charity challenge for the Dougie Mac in memory of a former team member who sadly passed away from cancer.

Following the passing of Avril Worrall, the team at Building Adhesives wanted to do something to make a difference and bring people closer together in her memory.

Avril was a key member of the Building Adhesives and ARDEX Group R&D and Quality team over 21 years and is sadly missed by her many friends and colleagues at the company.

Joe Myatt-Winterton, QC Controller, decided to organise a fundraising challenge in aid of Douglas Macmillan hospice – the Worrall family’s nominated charity who did so much to support Avril during her fight.

From February, people at the company have been encouraged to “Journey Around The Worrall”, a play on the word world – by walking, running, swimming, cycling or even rowing to complete 25,000 miles; equivalent to travelling around the world across the equator!

Anyone can contribute to the distance goal with any physical activity that can be measured in distance.

Joe said: “This is an extremely difficult challenge, but is designed to be challenging to raise as much money as possible for Douglas Macmillan hospice, and to require that we all come together to contribute – doing events and walks in groups to remember Avril and to try and provide a little happiness and support to each other; something that Avril always did for those around her.”

Individual miles travelled are added to the grand total that currently stands at 8,878 miles, which is more than a third of the way through their target, and are being measured by all sorts of available apps; for example, strava, garmin, map my run, mapometer, etc.

So far a group of participants – colleagues and their friends and family – have reached just over one third of their target, completing challenges such as running the Potter’s ‘Arf, cycling the Manifold Trail, and walking the Roaches as well as lots of walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking and even a bit of pedalo peddling!

The ARDEX Group UK achieved success on Friday night (May 12th) at the annual Tile Association Awards held at the Hilton Hotel in Birmingham with BAL XL Floor One adhesive taking home the “Highly Commended” award in the Best Innovation category.

ARDEX and BAL were also shortlisted for three other awards including Excellence in Marketing for the ARDEX Group UK’s multi-brand digital strategy, Best Domestic Project for Smith Hill House in Yorkshire, and Best Commercial Project (Large) for Knightsbridge Tube Station.

BAL have launched a new and improved flexible thick-bed tile adhesive for large format floor tiles.

Replacing BAL Pourable One on its range, BAL XL Floor One is a significant upgrade with XL-ent extended open time and XL-ent working time – taking some of the stress out of large format floor tiling.

Extended open and working times of the gel rheology of XL Floor One mean the adhesive remains wetter, smoother and creamier for longer – making for XL-ent workability.

BAL XL Floor One is easy to work with and apply and with an extended pot life of 90 minutes and open time of 60 minutes, fixers can confidently spread over larger areas for ease – have plenty of time to adjust tiles as they work – and ensure they have no product wasted by going off.

Mixed with a reduced water content of just 4 litres per 20kg bag, BAL XL Floor One holds its high-gel shape when trowelled with ribs sitting proud even up to 25mm without any slumping – yet ribs will collapse easily when tiles are vibrated or twisted for solid bed coverage.

Crucially this means that back-buttering is not always required with flat backgrounds and tiles!

If needed, BAL XL Floor One can be built up to 25mm bed depth for levelling small areas or patch repair – while also making it perfect for uncalibrated natural stone where consistent bed depths can’t always be achieved.

External porcelain

Water and frost resistant, and with large bed-depths, BAL XL Floor One is BAL’s recommended tile adhesive for laying porcelain, ceramic or natural stone on external concrete beds.

Threeasy does it – Building Adhesives and ARDEX celebrate awards success

Building Adhesives Ltd and ARDEX have celebrated award success at this year’s Tile Association Awards.

Held at The Hilton Birmingham Metropole on Friday (24th June), this year’s awards were themed “Stronger Together”, and recognised the best of the best in the tiling industry.

Success began with David Wilson, UK Head of Standards and Specifications at ARDEX and Building Adhesives Ltd being presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his more than 35 years’ service to the tiling industry.

Chosen by the TTA Board, this award recognises an individual who has made an outstanding contribution on the growth, promotion, technical or training areas of the wall and floor tile industry during their career.

A respected and leading industry voice, David first joined Building Adhesives Ltd as an R&D Chemist. A member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, David sits on numerous industry bodies including BSI B539 Technical Committee, CEN (European) Standards TC 67 WG3 and the TTA Technical Committee and has been responsible for helping to formulate many of the British Standards that tilers and contractors work to today.

Commenting on his award, Steve Brooks, UK Technical Director, said: “Congratulations to David for winning the 2022 Lifetime achievement award. David has made a tremendous contribution to both the Company as well as to industry over many years and this well-deserved award reflects this. David’s in depth technical knowledge and input into many technical documents has been invaluable.”

Success continued for Building Adhesives and ARDEX with Stacey Livett, UK Head of Customer Service, being awarded “Employee of the Year”.

Stacey was recognised for successfully integrating customer service and order management teams at Stoke-on-Trent and Haverhill, while facing major raw materials shortages, COVID restrictions and force majeures.

Despite these challenging conditions, she has helped deliver record orders for customers as well as ensuring end-users are supported with technical and product enquiries now fed into the joint team.

Commenting on her award, Darren Carty, Finance and Customer Services Director, said: Congratulations to Stacey for winning 2022 Employee of the Year award, Stacey has made a huge difference in the company over the past years and most recently since being appointed UK Customer Service Manager, we appreciate all your dedicated work, and this award is well deserved. Congratulations to you!”

Finally, ARDEX and Building Adhesives tasted success with “Highly Commended” in the Best Domestic Category, for a Dream Pool Project in Staffordshire by Rob Faulkner and his team from Abstract Pools.

The stunning swimming pool, jacuzzi, spa, massage room and changing rooms was completed using a full ARDEX fixing solution. The 590m2 project features a spectacular 3D feature wall with cut-in fountains, a metallic mosaic jacuzzi and changing rooms.

A very labour-intensive project, Rob carried out all the rendering, screed works, and installed the hand-built steam room, formed-experience showers, massage room and high-end changing room.

Looking good for the summer!

New look packaging for small powder products

To meet the demands of a changing market-place and provide leading solutions, BAL are excited to announce the launch of it’s new look small powders.

All powdered products 7.5kg and smaller are benefiting from a major investment into BAL’s manufacturing facilities in Stoke-on-Trent.

The new machinery is allowing BAL to move away from their current polybag packaging to new high-impact retail-friendly bags.

New packaging designs will maintain the core look of current products for easy transition and instant product recognition.

The most notable change is with BAL’s Micromax2 range of anti-microbial wall and floor grouts – where the design and style have been improved providing a number of benefits for end-user and stockist including:

  • Clearly colour identity including clear circular design element to show the actual grout colour in the bag
  • Cleaner front of bag design
  • Circular element highlighting BAL Micromax2 has the colour locked-in to the formulation – there is no need to mix the full bag – as the pigments are fully blended for improved consistency every application.

BAL’s new small powders will begin to hit the market this month (May) following through-sales of the old packaging.

BAL achieves international emissions reporting standard

Building Adhesives Ltd (BAL) and ARDEX UK, part of the global ARDEX Group, specialist manufacturers of construction materials for the tiling, flooring and general construction trade, have both achieved ISO 14064:1 (otherwise known as CEMARS) for the quantifying and reporting of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and removals.

Building Adhesives and ARDEX UK are the first companies in the ARDEX Group to achieve this standard and are believed to be the first companies in the tiling and flooring sectors to be reporting their GHG emissions through this internationally recognized standard.

This standard will assist both companies by providing accurate data to assess the impact of the various initiatives to be adopted in their efforts to deliver ambitious Carbon Neutral plans by 2030 (scope 1 and 2).

To achieve this internationally recognized standard, BAL and ARDEX UK worked with Achilles (an independent consultancy) to accurately measure their GHG emissions and create positive strategies to manage and continually reduce impacts.

Achilles’ Carbon Reduce (powered by Toitu) scheme highlights the necessary data required which is then measured, monitored and calculated under the ISO 14064:1,scheme. Following successful completion and assessment, executive reports are produced for independent verification.

Solutions to manage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at source were then provided, with external impartial auditors authorised to verify GHG inventories in accordance with the standard’s requirements.

David Shepherd, UK Operations Director and Corporate Lead on Supply Chain & Operations, said achieving ISO 14064:1 certification puts both companies on the path to Carbon Neutral Status by 2030 (scope 1&2).

“Against the backdrop of COP26 in Glasgow, we are all know the consequences on the planet of failing to reduce our carbon emissions.

“Every company in every sector of industry has a responsibility to reduce emissions with a goal of being carbon neutral. However, before you can act, you must be able to understand those emissions.

“Measuring GHG emissions under ISO 14064-1 including company vehicles, business travel, fuel and electricity, water and waste, helps us accurately identify areas of the business where we can reduce our emissions.”

Even before achieving ISO 14064:1, BAL and ARDEX UK have put in place several measures to reduce their carbon footprint including:

  • Converting diesel forklifts to electric
  • Partnering with a 100% renewable energy provider
  • Replacement of energy inefficient lighting with more efficient LED systems
  • Promoting the use of electric company vehicles and installation of EV charging points
  • Reducing the use of “virgin” plastics
  • Increasing the use of recycled raw materials

 

The easiest external tiling system under the sun

BAL – market-leaders in full tiling systems – have a launched a new external tiling range for easy installation of slabs and 20mm porcelain paving.

A new range for fixing external tiles and porcelain paving

The simple range provides a familiar system for the most-common process of installing patios and ground floor terraces.

Using the market-leading performance and quality standards, the new range provides improved installation for the two main build-ups in the UK: concrete or Type 1 MOT, or concrete which is in perfect condition for tiling.

When installing onto concrete or Type 1 MOT, easy fixing is made possible with three new BAL External Range Products:

When fixing onto concrete which is in a good condition for tiling, but may need smoothing out, BAL is launching new BAL Level Out, a fast-setting one-part external levelling compound for smoothing rough or impact damaged concrete.

 

 

BAL Level Out has a number of performance benefits including:

  • Fast-setting – walkable after 2-3 hours
  • Apply from 2mm to 20mm thick in a single application

ARDEX takes up majority stake in wedi

Witten, 21 September 2021. Ardex continues to grow: the Witten-based construction chemicals specialist is taking up a majority shareholding in wedi GmbH, a leading manufacturer of system solutions for high-quality wet room solutions domiciled in Emsdetten – it is the largest acquisition in the company’s history. The employees of both family-run companies have already been informed of the development. In this respect, the management made it clear that wedi will continue to operate independently. In addition, Stephan Wedi and Fabian Rechlin will remain in place as the manging directors of wedi. Stephan Wedi will also continue in his shareholder role.

For Mark Eslamlooy, CEO of the Ardex Group, this cooperation is a milestone in the development of the company – and his delight at the future collaboration with wedi is correspondingly great. “The Ardex Group is taking a major step forward with the acquisition of the market leader for watertight shower and construction systems. Inventor of watertight shower and construction systems

BAL have launched a new one-coat waterproofing solution for bathrooms, wetrooms and showers prior to tiling.

 

Available now, BAL Waterproof 1C is a ready-mixed tanking solution that can be used without priming on most common substrates* and is ready to tile after only two hours!

Formulated with fibre-strand technology for improved strength, it can be applied in one-coat on walls and floors with a brush, roller or 4mm notched trowel.

No additional tapes or matting are needed as it is crack-bridging from 2-3mm.

This innovative new product is lightweight with easy-to-apply rheology and provides excellent coverage of up to 6m² – making it suitable for domestic shower rooms, bathrooms or wetrooms.

BAL Waterproof 1C also has sustainable benefits with Low VOC and using 40% recycled materials.

As part of the launch, BAL is streamlining its current waterproofing solution by deleting BAL WP1 / BAL Waterproofing Kit – and old technology that will be replaced by the higher performing Waterproof 1C.

Continuing in the product range will be BAL Tank-it – a quicker setting 2-part powder and liquid product that can be tiled in only 90 minutes.

BAL Tank-it can also be used for large scale commercial projects and external waterproofing such as balconies and terraces.

UK Commercial Team Announcement

Reporting into David Hackett, General Manager – Building Adhesives Ltd (BAL), David Lyman, formerly BAL Sales & Marketing Director will take on the new role of UK Commercial Director with responsibility for the key functional areas of Tiling, Flooring and the Home Improvement Channel (HIC).

UK Marketing and Training will also report into David Lyman.  Andy Reid, formerly ARDEX Business Development Director takes on the recently formed role of UK Business Development Director overseeing major project specification selling across the UK for both ARDEX and BAL, also reporting into David Hackett.

Peter Bell remains as the Managing Director of both businesses and member of the ARDEX Group Global Management Committee.

As part of his pre-retirement plan until July 2021, Lee Kidd – ARDEX Sales & Marketing Director will provide support to the newly re-structured UK Commercial Team and support the business transformation with his vast experience of the respective markets.

The move consolidates the activities of all UK teams and more formally combines the forces of ARDEX and BAL for a stronger and more coordinated approach to the market.

BAL products to feature in new TV show

A range of BAL tiling products are to feature in a new bathroom make-over show on Channel 5.

GSA Bathrooms were approached in October by PI Productions to feature in a new show: Kitchens and Bathrooms: You Won’t Believe Your Eyes, hosted by Mark Miller from DIY SOS fame.

A £23k bathroom renovation in Edinburgh, featuring a £10,000 hand-made bespoke Jacuzzi bath shipped over from Italy, was selected to be filmed as part of the program which will air later this year.

The full project took two months to complete due to COVID hold-ups, finally finishing in December last year. TV crews were on-site for 6 weeks.

As well as the £10k Jacuzzi bath, the project featured stunning 1200mm x 600mm Marble Wall Tiles and 600×600 Kingston Floor Tiles from CTD Tiles, plus Metro Carrara Tiles from Topps Tiles.

Mark Miller and Stewart Knox

The tiling was completed by KK Tiling Ltd from Edinburgh who used BAL Flex One – enhanced standard set tile adhesive for the wall tiling and BAL Rapid Flex One for the floor tiling. All the tiles were grouted with BAL Micromax2 Grout in Gunmetal.

The 1200x600mm Marble Wall Tiles were used to complete one wall of the bathroom and the Jacuzzi surrounds, where they were fixed with a mitre finish.

The back wall, window surrounds and niche were tiled using the Metro Carrara Tiles in an offset herringbone pattern which was a last-minute design change by KK Tiling.

Kevin Swinton from KK Tiling explained the design change and the pressures of tiling with a TV crew filming their every move.

“The original design focused on the 1200×600 Marble Wall tiles extending around the whole bathroom, but after some stock issues, we decided to create a feature wall using Metro Carrara Tiles in a offset herringbone pattern. It definitely creates a focal point in the room, and draws the eye.

“This project was definitely a different sort of pressure, knowing that your every move and everything you say was being recorded, but we got used to it after a couple of days. Probably the most stressful part of the whole project came down to the last tile to be cut – if it snapped the wrong way in the cutter we could have been in big trouble as we had no spares – luckily it went the right way for us!

Kevin has always been a big BAL user and chose BAL Flex One for the walls due to its versatility.

He added: “Flex One is a great product and gave us that little bit of leeway to build out, up to 15mm in isolated areas, which was particularly useful as some of the walls weren’t 100% flat in places and some of the wall tiles were slightly bowed in the middle.”

Stewart Knox from GSA Bathrooms said: “It was absolute privilege to have been asked to take part in this up and coming television project. A knock-out finish for tiling

BAL – the market-leaders in full tiling solutions – have launched a streamlined grout family including new BAL Grout Flex – a highly flexible grout with high strength and coming in five key colourways – packing a punch with a reliable finish.

It comes in narrow or wide joint versions – Grout Flex and Grout Flex Wide Joint – for use from 2-5mm (narrow) and 3mm to 20mm (wide) joints.

Easy to apply and mix up with colour consistency whatever the size of mix, it provides a smooth finish.

BAL Grout Flex is available in 5kg and 10kg bags in White, Jasmine, Light Grey, Mid Grey and Dark Grey – with colour consistency in both narrow and wide joint versions. These have been identified as some of the most popular grout colours on the market and ensures that Grout Flex is suitable for a whole host of tiling designs and projects.

With more than 2 hours pot life, BAL Grout Flex gives fixers more time to grout up without worrying that the grout will go off in the bucket – even in hotter conditions – and means larger areas can be grouted with one mix.

A 24-hour set time means longer time to wash off.

As a flexible grout with a high polymer content, BAL Grout Flex is recommended for hard-water swimming pools, power showers and for use with porcelain, ceramics, marble, and natural stone in dry or wet environments.  It can also be used for highly trafficked areas such as shopping malls, changing rooms, restaurants, and leisure centres.

BAL moves to more environmentally friendly packaging

BAL – market leaders for tiling solutions in the UK – have continued to develop its sustainable business focus with the introduction of more 100% recycled plastic containers.

From material sourcing, through to product launch, the environment impacts remain a key focus within all BAL’s processes and environmental management.

As a result, the business continues to remove the use of single-use plastics and transition wherever possible to 100% recycled plastics across all their product ranges where plastic is still required.

This has already been introduced to BAL’s liquid category with new PCR recycled bottles (grey bottle colour, rather than white) and now notable with their ready-to-use range of adhesives.

A greener “Green Star”

In the coming weeks, BAL will also be moving to 100% recycled plastic buckets and lids for their popular Green Star range of ready-mixed tile adhesive for small ceramic wall tiles.

This change will then be rolled out across further products in the coming months.

Alex Underwood, Head of Marketing and Customer Services at BAL, said: “The new packaging can be easily identified as the lid is now dark grey rather than the original green, with the first 10,000 units in the market having a printed lid with the “made using 100% recycled plastic” communication visible.

“As well as the sustainability benefits from not using virgin plastics, there is also an increase in the level of performance of the new buckets. The bucket’s base strength has increased from 65kg to 125kg meaning the product is now more resilient than ever.”

The increase in strength also provides the future option of possible higher product stacking on pallets which would also reduce transportation carbon emissions per unit.

As well as the entire bucket and lid being made from 100% recycled plastic, the original plastic handle has been replaced with a metal one which is 100% recyclable, recoverable and more robust.

Alex added: “The change in packaging will not impact on supply of Green Star or on our customer’s current operations, but offers distributors, contractors and fixers a more sustainable product.”

BAL sets the standard for sustainability

In these times of climate change, sustainability must be a key focus for every manufacturer in the tiling and flooring market.

From material sourcing through to product launch, sustainability is a key focus for BAL.

Wherever possible, environmentally friendly raw materials are used with 12% of all raw materials made from recycled materials this year, up from 8.6% last year. Their target is to increase this to 20% by 2020.

Further to this 96% of their raw materials suppliers are UK-based and 50% of these are within 50 miles of BAL to reduce carbon footprint and emissions from logistics.

As well as the use of recycled raw materials in their products, BAL’s product development process dictates that any impact a new product may create – both positively or negatively – is cited in specific areas of new product proposals.

This includes impact from the raw materials or packaging used as well as any impact from the use of the product in the market.

“Sustainable innovation has led to key environmental gains within our product portfolio including Fibre Strand Technology (FST) developed and applied to core volume rapid-setting products allowing twice the working time and three times the open time,” says Alex Underwood, Head of Marketing at BAL.

“The use of FST in our core products means less product is wasted on-site. This technology now represents 45% of our adhesives and 97% of our levellers.”

BAL’s award-winning Rapid-Mat uncoupling mat also saves 1.5kg/m² (20%) of adhesive use compared to other market technologies. This product has saved circa 500T of adhesives use since its launch to the market.

The Stoke-on-Trent based manufacturer have also recently introduced a new uncoupling mat to the market – BAL Flexbone 2Easy – which saves approximately 2kg/m² of adhesive.

BAL Flexbone 2Easy is a unique floating uncoupling mat where no adhesive is needed underneath – a truly uncoupled system – and ensuring the saving on adhesive. Because it is floating, only basic preparation is needed – simply sweep or vacuum solid, level floors and lay the mat. No remove of residue, bitumen or laitance. No priming needed.

High yield adhesives that utilise re-useable material as a lightweight filler also form a key product category in BAL’s stable. Products like BAL Supercover and BAL Single Part FastFlex provide higher volumes of mixed product per kg (33% to 60% additional coverage is provided). These now represents 10% of their adhesives, with over 4,000T of alternate adhesive saved since their launch.  This is equivalent of a tiled area of 750,000m² – greater than the combined pitch size of every professional football team in all of the leagues in England, Scotland & Wales.

Further to this, despite being an American-based system, BAL has also developed LEED points data for specifiers for the full BAL range to ensure specifiers can consciously select a sustainable product for new builds using a standard with which they are familiar.

“While there is an internal focus on circular economy opportunities, our current deliverable focus is to extend building life with the use of our products,” says Head of Marketing Alex Underwood.

“This is achieved by offering a market-leading 25-year guarantee to ensure durable, long-lasting builds and enabling a much longer product life-cycle. Our free specification service also provides correct specifications to over 50,000 people each year.

“While there is still a long-way to go, we believe we are on the right track to providing as sustainable solutions as possible and doing our part to mitigate the impacts of climate change.”

BAL supports DIY SOS project in Corby

BAL – market-leaders in full tiling solutions – have joined forces with CTD Tiles and Walls and Floors (Kettering) Ltd to donate tiles, adhesives and grout to a DIY SOS project in Corby, Northants.

The team from the BBC One programme was called in to help rebuild Jackie and Colin Hutchinson’s house – after builders let them down, leaving their house in a mess.

Jackie and Colin have a 16-year-old son Jordan who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy and had spent a £60,000 loan on urgent modifications to their home – but the family were left with a shell without a roof, forcing them to move in with Mrs Hutchinson’s mother.

Scores of tradesmen – including tiler Andrew Forti from Northampton – pitched up to support the project, giving up their time for free to rebuild the house including a new kitchen, bathroom, and a fully inclusive wet room.

BAL donated Flex One S1 enhanced standard set adhesive, BAL Pourable One pourable thick bed floor adhesive, BAL Green Star and BAL Micromax2 Grout in a variety of colours through CTD Tiles in Northampton.

Tiles including Chalk Farm White Smooth Metros, Sorgente Manatee Grey Mosaics, Shoreditch Wood Acacia Tiles and light grey metro tiles were donated by Walls and Floors Ltd in Kettering.

Presenter Nick Knowles told the BBC: “To have a youngster with a disability and not be able to go into an environment to try to make life better is really frustrating.”

From start to finish the rebuild took nine days, with more than 100 people working on the house every day.

Mrs Hutchinson said a completed house would bring some normality back into their lives and give Jordan freedom in his own home.

“It would mean the world, especially to Jordan and for us as parents to watch him grow into a young man and just have a little bit of independence,” she said.

Alex Underwood, Head of Marketing at BAL said: “This is a great example of local tradespeople and companies coming together to help Jackie and Colin give their son a home where he can live independently.

“We were delighted to help in some small way towards this fantastic project by the BBC DIY SOS team.”

New venture Belvedere Stone joins forces with BAL

Launching this month (February), Belvedere Stone is part of the Lovell Stone Group, a family-owned company who own and operate 5 quarries in the UK.

The company has taken its significant knowledge and technical expertise and applied that to source stones from around the world.

Belvedere Stone offers a collection of excellent quality, hard-wearing and versatile stone products. BAL goes greener with new energy deal

BAL – market-leaders in full tiling solutions – have signed a new 24-month energy contract with a 100% renewable energy provider.

Beginning this month, the Stoke-on-Trent-based manufacturer of tile adhesives, grouts, levellers and other ancillary tiling products will be supplied by Ørsted – a Danish company that leads the world in offshore wind.

Formed as DONG Energy in 2006 following the merger of six Danish energy companies, Ørsted have completed divested their black energy operations and have established themselves with a 25% market share in offshore wind operations.

On a global scale, they have built enough offshore wind to power 9.5 million people, with an ambition by 2025 to power 30 million people with offshore wind.

In 2017, Ørsted opened the world’s largest offshore wind turbines at Burbo Bank Extension in Liverpool Bay and continue to grow its offshore presence in UK waters.

Paul Vickers, Head of Procurement at BAL, said: “At BAL we are always looking at ways to cut our carbon footprint, from replacing our lighting systems with energy-saving LEDs to light detectors, replacement of steam boilers and new dedicated energy-saving air compressors.

As well as numerous energy saving and waste recycling initiatives, BAL also supports Cool Earth – the environmental charity protecting rainforests worldwide.

Cool Earth works with local communities to protect imminently threatened rainforest and protectively blockades tens of thousands of acres of adjacent forest in the Amazon rainforest in Peru.

Alex Underwood, Head of Marketing added: “With our support, Cool Earth’s initiatives in the Ashaninka region have helped save 350 acres from deforestation.

“This means more than 80,000 trees have been protected with more than 90,000 tonnes of CO2 locked-in. This is particularly crucial has deforestation has played a massive part in the climate emergency we are currently dealing with.”

Encompassing all of BAL’s processes is continual improvement. The business is triple badges to all three management system standards (9001, 14001 and 18001) and it is currently working towards ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard.

MOSAIC “COWCH” RAISES £3600 FOR CHARITY

A mosaic decorated life-sized Highland cow bench has raised £3,600 for the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance.

“Sweetie Annie” – designed by mosaic artist Katy Galbraith – was part of a Highland Cow art trail in the Perthshire town of Crieff.

Eleven of the Crieff cowches were placed around the Strathearn town by Crieff Succeeds this summer in an attempt to bring more tourists to the area.

The cowches were sold at a dinner event at the town’s Hydro for a total of £24,900.

Katy – who had lived in the town for 20 years – designed the cow around the theme of sugar mice as she was a sponsored by Gordon & Durward, a local sweet manufacturer and shop.

She worked primarily in recycled materials – including broken china and donated materials to keep costs down.

The project was particularly difficult due to the challenges involved with fixing due to the make-up of the cowch.

“Whilst I had been forewarned that the surface of the Cowch was textured, I hadn’t really realised just how textured it was – even the painters found it challenging,” she said.

“Every tile had to be cut down to fit the various curves. It was going to take longer than anticipated, so a call out to volunteers brought in friends and other mosaic artists to assist.  

“Many of the volunteers made a mouse using contact adhesive and mounting adhesive film as the transfer method.”

The mosaic was fixed with PU adhesive and grouted in BAL Micromax2 Pecan and Jade mixed with BAL Admix GT1 donated by Topps Tiles in Perth.

The stunning project took more than 260 hours over 30 days to complete, with a further 120 hours by volunteers.

Amazon fires threaten “essential safety net against climate change”

BAL’s charity partner Cool Earth has warned about the devastating impact of forest fires sweeping through swathes of rainforest.

Some 72,000 forest fires burned between January and August this year which is more than double the number recorded in the whole of 2013.

More than 9,500 rainforest fires were observed burning in one week since 15 August alone, mostly in the Amazon region. In comparison, there were fewer than 40,000 in the whole of 2018.

Areas of Brazil saw an 88% increase in deforestation in June 2019 compared to the same month in 2018. That’s areas of Amazon rainforest roughly the size of a football pitch now being cleared every single minute. 

As a result, more people are becoming aware of the impact that humanity is having on the world’s rainforest and the urgent need to keep them protected.

A spokesperson for Cool Earth, which works with indigenous people to halt deforestation, said: “Brazil’s Amazon rainforest has seen a record number of fires this year. This burning caused a thick layer of smoke to descend across Sao Paulo more than 1,700 miles away.

“Although the smoke may have cleared and media attention has passed, forest fires and deforestation will continue out of sight and mind if we fail to take global action now.

“Fires like this aren’t natural in tropical rainforests. Their permanently wet and humid state make them normally resistant to fast-spreading fires. But even the most water sodden rainforest is no match for the systematic and unrelenting clearing that is taking place in Brazil today. Coupled with severe drought, 50% less rainfall

and high temperatures, rainforest fires will begin to rapidly spread if action isn’t taken.

“Rainforest is undeniably our greatest safety net against catastrophic climate change. Areas of primary tropical rainforest, like the Amazon, can be thousands of years old and are crucial and irreplaceable stores of carbon. Once these forests are cut down or burnt, they may never return to their original state”.

The underlaying causes of forest destruction are largely driven by poverty. That makes it essential to ensure that local indigenous people are in control of their communities and areas and earn more from keeping the forest standing than they would otherwise earn from clearing them.

BAL supports Cool Earth’s Ashaninka project in the Peruvian Amazon and has helped saved more than 667 acres of rainforest, protecting some 46 million trees and prevented over 52 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Alex Underwood, Head of Marketing, said the recent fire in the Amazon were alarming.

“We have supported Cool Earth since 2011, recognising how important the Amazon rainforest is in carbon capture and the need to take direct action to keep trees standing.

“The devastating forest fires in Brazil and other tropical countries such as Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo in recent months are particularly worrying and highlight the need to continue supporting the amazing work of charities such as Cool Earth. Due to the success of its CPD programme, BAL are launching  nationwide tiling surgeries at architectural practices across the country.

These sessions offer architects, specifiers and design teams in-house technical support with tile and stone advice or a simple Q & A session on any aspect of tiled installations..

BAL helps school celebrate 150th anniversary

BAL have helped an Uxbridge school celebrate their 150th anniversary by providing fixing materials for a special tiled mural.

The large mural on the side of the school features a tree made up of handprints from every one of the 250 plus pupils and staff.

The mural was presented during an afternoon celebration with families of pupils old and new, plus the Deputy Mayor of Uxbridge who cut a special cake.

Site manager Gerry McGuire tiled the mural using BAL’s new Flex One enhanced S1 standard set adhesive and grouted with Micromax2 in Snow.

Suitable for use internally or externally, BAL Flex One has revolutionised the standard-set category with a long open and working time, excellent non-slip properties and six-hour set.

BAL continues to strengthen sales and marketing team

BAL – the market leaders in full tiling solutions – have made moves to strengthen their sales and marketing teams with two new appointments.

New Marketing Manager Kathryn Hyde

Kathryn Hyde has joined as Marketing Manager, and David Moore as Area Sales Manager for the North West and North Wales respectively.

Kathryn brings with her a wealth of expertise in communications and customer engagement from a variety of sectors in the B2B arena.

Following her appointment, Kathryn said: “It is a pleasure to be joining a company with such a renowned reputation for quality products and the unique services it offers to the market. I look forward to supporting the business and its customers in ensuring that tiles remain the surface solution of choice.”

BAL strengthens sales and specification support team

BAL have bolstered their specification team with two new hires.

Mark Lambourn joins the team as Specification Manager covering the Midlands and Wales. He has extensive experience in the construction sector working with architects, house/modular builders, contractors and building owners to deliver high quality specifications.

Based in Derby, Mark joins BAL from A Proctor Group Ltd, where he combined commercial and technical expertise to promote a portfolio of technically advanced thermal, acoustic and membrane system solutions, from specification through to project delivery. 

Also joining BAL is Richard Milligan who will work as Specification Manager for the North of England.

Originally from Bangor in Northern Ireland, but now living in Newcastle upon Tyne, Richard joins BAL from TPG The Parkside Group where his role was as an Architectural Advisor / Project Manager.

He previously spent more than 10 years with EGGER (UK) in production, sales and specification roles delivering high value projects and presenting CPDs within architectural practices.

Mark and Richard will work with architects, designers and specifiers supporting them on M40/M20 specifications, providing project support and delivering BAL’s suite of RIBA-approved CPDs.

BAL Flexbone 2Easy named Best Innovation at industry awards

BAL – market-leaders in full tiling solutions – are celebrating after their unique floating uncoupling mat was voted the Best Innovation at The Tile Association Awards 2019.

BAL Flexbone 2Easy is a truly uncoupled solution. The uncoupling mat is laid loose on the subfloor – preparation can be reduced to just a quick sweep of the floor, provided it is flat, level and sound. This means the product can be used over mastic asphalt, mixed substrates, bitumen, screeds with laitance, contaminated screeds and screed with cracks.

Designed with perforations, vapour channels and a mesh weave reinforcement, the system ventilates and uncouples the covering from the substrate in a single process – permanently and reliably.

Any residual moisture in the substrate is evenly distributed through a system of channels and then drawn off through the perforations in the mat via the grout joints. In this way, substrates that are still damp are not encapsulated.

This means the mat can be laid on fresh screeds including sand:cement when it’s walkable, and anhydrite screeds at 1.5% Carbide Method water content (usually minimum 0.5% CM water content is required before tiling). Saving on preparation can save up to 50% of the total installation time.

Raising the Standard

BAL – market leaders for full tiling solutions – are revolutionising the standard-set category with new adhesive technology; BAL Flex One.

Fixers always want to finish an installation as quickly as possible. Often rapid-setting adhesives are preferred to ensure grouting can begin quickly. However, this can provide challenges during installation.

With its ‘One’ rapid-set technology, BAL have previously helped fixers with its rapid-setting products that provide significantly longer open and working times than all other rapid-set products but are still ready to grout in 3 hours.

With ever larger tiles growing in popularity, complex designs required, possibly difficult or irregular backgrounds on-site and even hotter temperatures being experienced now in the summer months; the use of even improved rapid-set adhesives still may not provide enough open, working or adjustability time for a fixer.

The UK market has seen other ‘semi-rapid’ products also launched, which are essentially based on over-retarded rapid-set formulations.

When traditional rapid-set chemistry is retarded to get a longer open and working time, there is a limit on how much the cement chemistry can be retarded before strength development is adversely affected.

Heavily retarded rapid-sets may also have performance limitations or suffer in on-site conditions where the required  working and open times may not be achieved, as the product increases in viscosity and application becomes more difficult.

However, the new BAL technology is the first truly enhanced standard-set technology – developed from traditional standard-set chemistry as a basis. 

Long open and working time performance will always be achieved more consistently using a standard set adhesive, or a product using this chemistry as a basis.

In response to customer demand, BAL’s market-leading R&D team have developed an enhanced standard set adhesive with a long open time, excellent non-slip properties and may be grouted in as little as 6 hours. Something that has never been achieved before.

BAL Flex One provides a truly innovative technology that raises the standard.

Set Your Own Pace

BAL Flex One give fixers longer working and open times– but still has a faster setting time prior to grouting.

Outperforming other products with an excellent 2.5 hour working time and a 45-minute open time at 20°C – this allows more working time to fix in warmer conditions (and less wastage in buckets), more time to adjust larger tiles, and more time when working on particularly complex installations.

With a 6-hour set time, the new adhesive allows fixers to grout in the evening or early the next day – significantly cutting down installation time compared to traditional standard setting products that require up to 24 hours to set!

Freedom to Perform

Fixer friendly, BAL’s new standard set technology also provides outstanding usability – helping to overcome the many obstacles that face fixers on a modern project.

With one of the thickest bed depths on the market for standard sets up to 15mm and, the formulation helps fixers to overcome some background irregularities where isolated building out may be required.

What’s more, it utilises technology first developed by BAL including super smooth gel rheology, a thixotropic formulation with shape memory, and full wettability where there is no need to adjust the water content to get the full performance benefits.

The new adhesives also have superb non-slip performance, easily exceeding the requirements of EN 12004 for “T” rated adhesives.

A true all-rounder

Highly flexible with S1 deformability, BAL Flex One is suitable for use with all tile types including ceramic, porcelain, natural stone – mosaics, terrazzo, brick slips and uncalibrated stone (for floors).

Suitable for interior and exterior applications and in dry and wet environments, the adhesives are particularly recommended for large format wall and floor tiles and may be used for swimming pools and total immersion and showers.

Because of its flexibility, BAL Flex One can be used on installations subject to limited movement and vibration, plus underfloor heating, including heated cement; sand screed sub-floors and electric undertile floor heating cable systems.

BAL Flex One has excellent grab and can be used on existing soundly bonded unglazed ceramic tiles, quarry tiles, terrazzo and natural stone tiles .

The adhesives are white in colour, meaning that only one bag is needed whether you’re tiling with natural stone, ceramic or porcelain tiles.

BAL shortlisted for four TTA Awards

BAL have been named as finalists in four categories at The Tile Association (TTA) Awards 2019.

Celebrating the best in the wall and floor tiling industry, the TTA Awards are this year taking place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on the 12th April.

In addition, BAL has supported the entry by Wesley Geraghty from Atlas Tiling Ltd of The Gart – a stunning 19th Century property in Callander, Scotland – which has been shortlisted for Best Domestic Project. BAL products played a crucial role in more than 500m² of tiling on three floors and seven bathrooms.

Major investment in sales and support teams

BAL, the market-leader for full tiling solutions,  has made a significant investment in its sales, support and specification teams to provide a greater service provision to tilers, contractors, specifiers and distributors.

The Stoke-on-Trent-based manufacturer has doubled its sales team, while additionally creating a new Training and Technical Support Team of five and adding to its Specification Support Team.

Joining the BAL team as Area Sales Managers (ASMs) are; Lewis Lupton (Northern England and Scottish Borders), Geoff Cavell (East Midlands), Michael Maher (M5/M40 Corridor, Beds, Bucks and Herts) , Richard Homan (Kent and Sussex) and Andy Oates (London).

Also joining is John Stewart who will act as Regional Sales Manager for Yorkshire while Simon Harding has been promoted to Regional Sales Manager for East Anglia. Both John and Simon will have additional responsibilities plus managing key accounts.

To accommodate the expanded team, current BAL ASMs have had their areas of responsibility reassigned as follows: John Hunter (Scotland to Central and Northern Scotland), Martin Chappell (M56 Corridor to Staffordshire, North West and North Wales), Keiron Birch (Midlands to West Midlands, Central, South and West Wales), and Nick Harman (London and South East to Hants, Berks and Surrey)

Paul Glover will remain as ASM for the South West.

In addition, BAL have appointed Debi Boulton as Head of Sales. Debi previously worked as Sales and Marketing Manager for sister brand Dunlop and has been with the business for nearly 20 years.

Commenting on the investment, David Lyman, BAL Sales Director said: “The addition of six new members of the sales team means that we can cover more areas of the country and provide a greater of level of support to our customers. This means more face-to-face visits, more trade events and more product training.

“As part of our investment, our Area Sales Managers will be getting more “hands-on” at trade events and work as a link between our distribution network and their customers including on-site project support and specifications where required.

“Debi joins having delivered significant sales growth for Dunlop and with a wealth of experience in the industry has the knowledge and skills to deliver for both BAL and our partners.”

The new Training and Technical Support team will be led by Dave Rowley, BAL Training Manager and will assist the Area Sales Managers for larger trade events, training for fixers and contractors and trade counter staff on-site, and technical support on larger projects.

The team will work nationwide as and when called upon – working closely with BAL’s Technical Advisory and Specification Service (TAS).

“Training and Technical Support continues to be at the forefront of what we stand for as the market-leader for full tiling solutions,” added David.

“Having a dedicated team means we can provide additional support for fixers, contractors and distributors – including the option to deliver more practical and bespoke training courses both on-site or at our multi-purpose and high spec Innovation and Technology Centre.”

Specification Support Team

BAL has expanded its Specification Team support with the appointment of Keith Pearce as Specification Manager for London and the South East.

Keith has nearly 30 years’ experience in the construction industry, including 26 years at CEMEX – one of the UK’s leading suppliers of cement, ready mix concrete, screeds and aggregates.

He held numerous roles including technical manager, training advisor and operations supervisor. Latterly involved in working with architects closely on specifications Keith brings a wealth of technical experience to the role.

In addition, BAL have promoted Stuart Ross to Head of Specifications. Stuart previously worked as BAL’s Technical Services Advisory Supervisor working closely with the Specification team over the years on some key projects, with previous experience as Business Development Manager for CPDs and Specifications.

Commenting on his and Keith’s appointment, he said: “We are extremely pleased to welcome Keith to the team. Bringing with him a wealth of technical and architectural, solution-based knowledge and experience, Keith is a superb addition to our growing team of experts, complementing our strategic plans for the future of Specification at BAL.

“I am delighted to be appointed Head of Specifications. It is a role which is at the heart of our business. My own passion has always been working closely and responsibly with architects, whether supporting through CPD presentations or providing technical guidance to ensure that they achieve a small but no less important aspect of their design and vision.”

New innovations at SDS 2019

BAL are presenting innovative new tiling technologies including its unique Flexbone uncoupling mats on Stand 618.

Developed to protect floor tiling from lateral movement which occurs in problem substrates – such as heated floors – BAL Flexbone uncoupling mats provide a buffer layer between tile and substrate.

BAL Flexbone comes in two varieties – Flexbone VAried and Flexbone 2Easy. Unique to the UK, BAL Flexbone 2Easy is a floating mat system – where NO adhesive is needed underneath the mat system i.e. the mat is truly uncoupled.

Because no adhesive is needed under the mat, preparation is reduced to a quick sweep of the floor if the surface is flat, sound and level. No removal or residue, no removal of laitance and no priming of the surface is needed. This means that contaminated and stained floors, wooden floors, bitumen, cracked screeds and mixed substrates can be tiled immediately.

It can also be used direct onto difficult substrates such as bitumen, fresh sand:cement screeds or new anhydrite screeds that are not fully cured (up to 1.5% CM residual moisture).

Time trials indicate the removal of subfloor preparation for installations provides a circa 50% time saving.

BAL Flexbone VAried is a bonded mat system for heavily trafficked areas. Waterproof, it features patented GripLock Technology for superior adhesion and a unique bone structure for faster fixing than traditional cavity mat systems.

Less adhesive is required on the mat surface, and trials indicate adhesive can be spread on the mat surface circa. 30% faster

The bonded mat is perfect for high load-bearing and commercial areas such as shopping malls, airports, car showrooms, office building and hospitals.

Odhran takes home gold at SkillBuild 2018

Odhran Connelly from Southern Regional College in Northern Ireland was victorious at the SkillBuild 2018 National Finals in Wall and Floor Tiling.

Odhran beat off stiff competition from silver medallist James Ackland (Cardiff and Vale College), bronze medallist Mariusz Kanjecki (City of Glasgow College),

Callum Pearson (Highly Commended from Leeds College of Building) and four other competitors.

The finals of the national construction competition for apprentices and trainees took place at the NEC from 15 – 17 November as part of the WorldSkills UK Live exhibition.

Throughout the three-day, 18-hour competition, contestants were asked to tile a wall and floor based on a 3D building design and 150mm x 150mm ceramic tiles.

Competitors fixed the tiles with BAL Max Flex Fibre and BAL Rapid-Flex One and grouted with BAL Micromax2 Snow including BAL Micromax Sealant for all movement joints.

Dave Rowley, BAL training manager and lead judge for SkillBuild 2018 said: “Many congratulations to Odhran for winning a hard-fought final competition. The standard of fixing throughout the three days was exceptionally high which made adjudicating very hard.

“As a company we are committed to training the next generation of tilers to a high standard, so supporting the SkillBuild competition is a priority of ours. Competitions like these help raise standards and give trainees and apprentices a focus and standard to work towards.”

SkillBuild is now in its sixth year and is run by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board). The competition sees the very best students from Regional Heats compete in ten construction occupations, including tiling, to be crowned the overall SkillBuild winner in their chosen trade.

As a national SkillBuild winner, Odhran is eligible to compete at WorldSkills 2019 being held in the Russian city of Kazan.

“Fast track installation in possible as any residual moisture in the substrate is distributed evenly through a system of channels and can also ventilate via the covering joints through perforations in the mat.”

As well as time savings from the lack of preparation, materials costs are also significantly reduced with no need for primers, plus a massive adhesive saving of 2kg/m², when compared to laying bonded cavity mat systems.

Time trials indicate the removal of subfloor preparation for installations provides a circa 50% time saving.

Because BAL Flexbone 2Easy is laid loose as a floating system, it is perfect for heritage projects where it is necessary to protect historic, sensitive substrates, plus areas where the ability to change the floor regularly is a requirement – e.g. rental properties.

BAL Flexbone VAried is a bonded mat system, with the same installation process as other fixed cavity mat systems in the market.

Unique to BAL Flexbone is the patented GripLock Technology and unique bone structure.

The patented design has been independently tested to provide the highest shear strength (providing more accommodation of higher levels of lateral movement) and the highest tensile strength (to stops tiles ‘popping-off’ or cracking under pressure). BAL have launched a new improved epoxy grout specifically for floor tiling installations.

Available in new Smoke and Ebony colours, BAL Floor Epoxy is a three-part hygienic impervious epoxy resin grout for floors.

With a resin-based formulation comprising liquid resin, liquid hardener and powder filler, BAL Floor Epoxy offers numerous benefits for the contractor as it is particularly recommended for large-scale commercial projects.

Because the filler is available as a separate component, other colours are available to order on a project-by-project basis* to match your tiles or chosen colour-scheme.

James Purrett

James Purrett joins the team as Specification Manager covering the Midlands and Wales. He has extensive experience in the bathroom sector, joining BAL from Venesta – the washroom and cubicles company – where he worked for six years as Specification Manager.

James’ previous roles include Design Engineer at Washroom Accessory Company and Product Designer at Venesta, Amwell & Bushboard. He is also a qualified CAD Technician and worked on large scale projects including the M1 widening scheme.

Also joining BAL is John Hunter who will work in Specification and Sales in Scotland. Edinburgh-based, John has more than 20 years-experience in the tiling sector including more than 16 years with Johnson Tiles.

In one of their most challenging builds, Nick Knowles and DIY SOS team recently built a brand-new gym for the Dale Youth Boxing Club which was previously housed in Grenfell Tower.

To support the build, Stoke-on-Trent-based BAL donated adhesive, tanking, grout and sealants with tiles donated by Walls and Floors (Kettering) Ltd.

Founded 60 years ago, Dale Youth Boxing Club had been based in the first floor of the Grenfell Tower since 1999. A valuable local resource, and one of the best boxing clubs in the country, the club has been credited with turning around the lives of many young people in the area.

Over the years, they have successfully nurtured more than 200 Amateur Boxing Association Champions as well as honing the skills of 2008 Beijing Olympic Gold Medallist James DeGale and current WBA Super-Middleweight champion George Groves.

Since the devastating fire in June last year, the club had been based in a car-park, but now it can flourish in a new custom-built facility on a site situated under the A40 Westway in West London.

The new facility took nine weeks to build and even had some royal help from Prince William, who took some time out of his busy schedule to help with some painting and meet volunteers and members of the community.

Earlier this year the BBC issued a call-out for volunteers to donate their skills, time efforts and companies to donate materials to help the DIY SOS team bring the new gym to fruition.

After hearing of the call, BAL kindly agreed to supply Single Part Flexible adhesive, BAL Tank-it waterproofing membrane, Micromax2 Grout Smoke and Micromax Sealant Smoke for changing rooms, toilets and a kitchen at the facility.

As well as providing materials, BAL also provided technical support to the tilers working on the project through Andy Oates, BAL Product Support Technician for the South East.

We are really looking forward to getting a new space.”

The DIY SOS team added: “We would like to thank the incredible generosity of the building companies, suppliers and volunteers who have helped on this huge project, without whom it would never have happened.”

Taking place in Budapest from 26-28 September, the members of Team UK will be taking on the best apprentices in Europe with the aim of being crowned champions in their chosen skills.

Representing the UK in wall and floor tiling is Mark Scott from City of Glasgow College. Mark won the SkillBuild National Final, run in partnership with WorldSkills UK, last year and is also part of the squad currently training with the aim of competing in WorldSkills Kazan 2019 along with Daniel McBurney from Southern Regional College in Northern Ireland.

Competitors in this year’s SkillBuild will be eligible to compete in WorldSkills Shanghai 2021 if they meet the competition criteria.

BAL has sponsored regional and national SkillBuild tiling competitions since 2004, while Dave Rowley, Training Manager at BAL, has acted as Lead Judge since 2009.

A Robin with a Royal Twist

BAL – market-leaders in full tiling solutions – have supported award-winning mosaic artist Julie Vernon by donating the adhesives and grout to create a stunning robin sculpture for Hoodwinked 2018.

“Royal Robin Redbreast” is one 33 statues – each with its own unique design – which will feature around Nottingham from July to September as part of the Robin Hood-themed art trail.

The project has been organised by Nottingham City Council in partnership with Wild at Art, which has delivered similar public art events such as The Big Sleuth in Birmingham last year.

Once the trail has finished in September, the statues will be taken away and put up for auction in September with proceeds going to Nottinghamshire Hospice.

Julie’s design, sponsored by Castle Rock Brewery, will be on display outside Nottingham Railway Station and is inspired by the history of Royal connections to Nottingham Castle.

Julie added: “William the Conqueror built the first castle in 1067 and Royal residents have included Henry II and Richard the Lionheart. It’s also where Richard III left to ride into battle at Bosworth. The mosaic design reflects the fact that each robin can be recognised by a unique breast pattern”.

“Thanks to BAL for supplying the fixing and grouting material free of charge. Their products are great for mosaics and always serve me well!”

Building Adhesives Limited – manufacturers of tile adhesives, grouts, sealants and ancillary tiling, flooring and decorating products under the BAL and Dunlop brands – has appointed David Lyman as the company’s new Sales Director.

Overseeing the sales teams for both brands, David brings a wealth of experience having spent more than 10 years with Hilti in various sales roles, rising to Market Segment/ Trade Manager for Northern Europe.

David graduated from The University of Hull with a Business Degree before completing a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Lancaster University.

Former Tile Fixer of the Year joins BAL

In 2015 Andy was named as The Tile Association (TTA) Tile Fixer of the Year and joins BAL after nearly 20 years in the tiling industry.

Qualifying with a NVQ Level 2 from Lambeth College, Andy began his tiling career with Moderna before joining Wilson & Wylie Contracts Ltd and then Stortford Tiling and Marble. In 2016 he founded Woodford Tiling which provided full tiling services for both residential and commercial tiling.

Andrew is joined in the Product Support Team by Sean Page who will work with fixers, contractors and distributors in East Anglia.

Sean, from Colchester, spent more than 10 years as a professional tiler with his own business Kabenza Tiling, developing his business and customer base from scratch and working in both the domestic and commercial markets.

Founded more than 20 years ago by the market-leaders for full tiling solutions, the PST concept is an integral focus of the many support services BAL provides to tilers, contractors and distributors. The nationwide team provide on-site consultancy and training, resolving any issues found prior to or during tiling work, as well as advice online and on the phone. They have many years of tiling experience between them and are highly regarded throughout the industry for their technical expertise.

BowWoW BAL

BAL – market leaders in full tiling solutions – have teamed up with international mosaic artist Natalie Guy for art and design charity fundraising project BowWow Haus London 2018.

BowWow Haus London is a fundraising and creative collaboration between pet charity Blue Cross, American not-for-profit organisation Outdoor Arts Foundation and photographer Drew Gardener.

A network of architects, designers and artists – including Natalie – are creating bespoke dog kennels to be displayed throughout London for the first ever auction of artistic dog kennels in Britain.

More than 75 one-off dog kennels will go on show at several London venues, including St Pancras International and will be available to buy at a charity gala auction on 26th April or via online bids.

Inspirational names already on board include the internationally famous Zaha Hadid Architects, and multi-award winning designers Denizen Works.

Natalie has designed a teepee shaped dog kennel featuring over 540 mosaic white flowers and buds, inspired by spring.  The kennel has been grouted in BAL Micromax2 Gunmetal, kindly donated by the Stoke-on-Trent-based manufacturer.

Rapid-setting and highly flexible, BAL Micromax2 is formulated with built-in Microban antimicrobial protection. Suitable for walls and floors, for joint widths from 1mm to 20mm, BAL Micromax2 sets in two to three hours, enabling faster completion. BAL launches new revised CPDs

BAL – the market-leaders in full tiling solutions – have launched three new revised RIBA-approved tiling CPDs.

The CPDs, entitled “Floor Tiling Solutions for the Modern Build”, “Tiling Solutions for Heavily Trafficked Areas” and “Tiling Solutions for Leisure Centres”, have been re-launched with up-to-date technical information to better reflect the changes in British Standards and building and construction trends.

Floor Tiling Solutions for the Modern Build aims to assist in the design process for successful specification and installation of all types of tile to common constructional backgrounds.

The CPD is split into four interchangeable modules which Identify potential, costly problems, considers how these problems can arise, offers practical advice on preventative measures and the use of correct materials.  It highlights British (and European) standards, health and safety issues and identifies the different types of adhesives, grout and pre-preparation technology available.

Tiling Solutions for Heavily Trafficked Areas provides design and specification guidance on relevant codes of practice and explains new ceramic tile adhesive technology and EN classifications, as well as providing further guidance on problem solving and how to avoid potentially costly failures.

The CPD aims to assist specifiers in specifying the correct tile types, incorporating movement joints and general design considerations for commercial project with heavy traffic such as airports, car showrooms and train stations.

The final updated CPD – Tiling Solutions for Leisure Centres – looks at the design process for the successful specification and installation of ceramic, porcelain and natural stone tiling for leisure environments.

Simon and Geoff join support team

BAL have appointed Simon Harding and Geoff Cavell to its sales team.

Simon joins BAL as Area Sales Manager (ASM) for the East Anglia and the Home Counties. Based in Colchester, Simon will work with BAL distributors and other customers to develop the BAL product range and provide a first port of call.

With an extensive career in the tiling industry, Simon has worked for companies including Solus Ceramics, Ceramic Tile Distributors (CTD) and Colchester Tiles. He joins BAL from Johnson Tiles where he worked with the housebuilding sector in the south.

Also joining BAL is Geoff Cavell as a Product Support Technician (PST) for the Midlands. Worksop-based Geoff has worked in the tiling sector since leaving school, initially as an apprentice working for his father’s tiling business and then taking over the reins a few years ago as owner of the business.  He has been a keen user of BAL adhesives and will bring his practical tiling skills to his new role as PST.

BAL & CTi join forces for DIY SOS

BAL has joined forces with Tile & Stone Gallery part of the Ceramic Tiles Ltd Group based in Ipswich to provide tiles, adhesives and grout to help BBC DIY SOS improve the home of Simon Dobbin – who was left with brain damage after an unprovoked attack by football thugs.

In March 2015, Simon was set upon by a group of 25 men after watching his team Cambridge United play away at Southend United in Essex.

The brutal attacked left Simon fighting for his life after a stroke and bleed on the brain which left him with permanent brain damage.

Thirteen men were subsequently convicted for the attack and jailed for more than 42 years in total.

Earlier this year the BBC issued a call-out for volunteers to donate their skills, time efforts and companies to donate materials to help the DIY SOS team make much needed renovations to Simon’s home in Mildenhall, Suffolk.

After hearing of the call, Jonathan Newton Tile & Stone Gallery Senior Manager from the Ceramic Tiles Group kindly agreed to be the tile supplier with Johnsons supplying tiles. BAL were subsequently approached and kindly agreed to supply Micromax2 Grout, Rapid-Flex One adhesive and White Star Plus adhesive for the project.

Taking nine days, the work included a downstairs extension and bespoke care provision Mr Dobbin needs.

Before the completion of the project, Nicola Dobbin, Simon’s wife and full time carer said: “I’m totally and utterly overwhelmed by all the offers of help.

“I’m very excited that Simon will now have the space he deserves.

“The changes that will be made to the house will improve not only Simon’s life, but ours as a family.”

Jonathan Newton said: “Having grown up in the area I was already aware of the awful injuries inflicted on Simon and the effect this had on him and his family.  As soon as the company became aware that the DIY SOS team were involved we immediately wanted to help and after speaking to my Managing Director, Nick Braybrooke, we decided to do whatever we could. This story shows the generosity of people and it’s pleasing to see how willing so many people have been to give up their time and resources to help others in need.”

Tiling innovations at Surface Design Show

BAL are returning to the Surface Design Show to showcase a number of new products that greatly enhance their offering to architects, designers and contractors.

Taking place at the Business Design Centre in Islington from 6th – 8th February, the Surface Design Show brings together the best that the tiling, flooring and surfacing industry can offer.

Unlike constructions on traditional sand:cement screeds, BAL external tiling solutions utilises capillary passive technology, meaning excess surface water is rapidly shed down through a drainage screed and out of the assembly via a drainage mat, drain grates and edge profiles. Taking the water out of the system removes any threat of damage due to freeze-thaw cycle or moisture staining.

BAL at Skills London

BAL have teamed up with CITB (Construction Industry Training Body) and The Tile Association to demonstrate the benefits of a career in wall and floor tiling and other trades at Skills London – the UK’s biggest jobs and career events for 15-24-year olds.

 

Dave Rowley, BAL training manager, was there in his role as lead judge of wall and floor tiling at SkillBuild – the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices.

BAL is a long-time sponsor of SkillBuild, providing tiling materials for regional and national competitions.

On the SkillBuild stand, visitors could learn how to get into construction as well as finding out about TTA and BAL training courses. They could also have a go at a fun Union flag mural game.

BAL SPECIFICATION TEAM EXPANDS WITH THREE NEW HIRES

BAL have expanded their specification team with the appointment of three experienced specification sales managers.

Joining BAL are Daryl Smallbone, Allan Garland, and Phil Cooper, who will work with architects, designers and contractors to deliver tiling specifications and projects in London, the South West and the Midlands respectively.

Daryl has worked with major global leading manufacturers within the construction, off-site prefabrication and interior & design (A&D) markets with organisations such as Nexans, Formica and more recently, AKW, giving him more than 15 years’ experience in specification and product sales.

 

Daryl has a strong commercial track record of working with architects, strategic partner resellers in delivering high valued projects including Stratford City (Olympics 2012), SAS Radisson Hotels, Virgin Active and Wimbledon Tennis Club.  He has also had great success in forging close business relationships with main contractors, establishing joint partner frameworks and preferred supplier status agreements to support strong incremental business growth.

Allan has many years’ experience in the flooring and tiling sector joining from Burmatex Ltd, promoting the company’s portfolio of products through the A&D, interior designer, local authorities, end user, main contractors and flooring contractors platforms to deliver high end specifications.

Starting his career with Topps Tiles, Allan has worked for Kerakoll UK in the South West building new business and managing existing accounts. Previously he worked for Porcelanosa SW Ltd working on numerous large-scale projects, ranging from luxury builds to multiple plot developments for the likes of Devonshire Homes, Millwood Homes and RS Developments.

Phil Cooper has joined BAL in a consultancy role to work with architects and designers in the Midlands. BAL relaunches popular five-day training course

Following a surge in requests from tilers and contractors, BAL have relaunched their intensive five day wall and floor tiling course.

Held at BAL’s state-of-the-art Innovation and Technology Centre (ITC), the course combines modern training techniques including presentation, workshops, demonstrations as well as “hands on” practical work in individual bays designed to reflect real life installations.

Two great new preparations products from BAL

BAL tiling solutions have expanded their portfolio with two new preparation products to provide fixers, contractors and specifiers with strong and protected backgrounds for fail-safe tiling.

For the first time ever, BAL have introduced a new lightweight tile backer board for all internal environments. BAL Board is a moisture and water-resistant alternative to plasterboard and timber and helps tilers tackle problem walls and floors when fixing tiles. Easy to cut and install, it provides a solid base for tiling.

BAL is also introducing to its line-up BAL DPM – a new multi-purpose damp proof membrane, waterproofer and primer for use on walls and floors. BAL DPM is suitable for use on screeds with up to 98% RH readings (Hygrometer), or up to 87% RH on anhydrite screeds (or as per the screed manufacturers recommendations). BAL DPM provides a great defence against damp, moisture vapour and chemical attack.

BAL Board stands out from the scrum by being 15-35% lighter per m2 than similar cement-based products. No specialist cutting tools, fixings or screws are required for installations.

A specialist magnesium oxide tile backer board, BAL Board can proudly provide BBA approval and is manufactured under strict ISO approved quality control procedures to provide superior performance against all other backer boards.

Because it can be simply cut with a craft /utility knife or sharp blade, and then screw fixed with standard stainless steel or hot dipped galvanised screws (to timber studwork) – rather than using specialist tools – costs are significantly reduced.

BAL DPM is resistant to water, chemicals, grease and pollutants, and can be used internally or externally either as a DPM, primer, waterproofer or residual moisture vapour suppressant.

As a one coat primer with aggregate, it kicks into touch any problems with tiling onto difficult substrates as it aids adhesion onto steel, masonry and flooring grade asphalt.

New BAL DPM can be used on sand:cement screeds, power floated concrete and exiting tiles on walls and floor for basements below the water table. What’s more, it can also be used on anhydrite screeds with up to 87% RH, meaning less waiting and quicker tiling for fast track installations.

BAL DPM can also be utilised as an easy two-coat waterproofing system for walls and floors – perfect for use internally or for BAL external tiling systems.

As a residual moisture vapour suppressant, BAL DPM protects the floor covering from moisture and allows the controlled passage of moisture vapour protecting both the adhesive and the tiled surface.

BAL backs The Big Sleuth 2017

BAL – market-leaders in full tiling solutions – have lent their backing to a mosaic artist taking part in a fund raising art project in Birmingham.

The Big Sleuth is a fund raising initiative organised by Wild in Art and Birmingham Children’s Hospital. More than 200 large and small fibreglass bears are currently being decorated by artists, schools and community groups across the West Midlands.

Caroline Jariwala, a member of the British Association for Modern Mosiac (BAMM), has created “Sweet William Bear” – inspired by flowers quoted in Shakespeare’s writings.

After attending two mosaic mural training courses at BAL – Caroline has fixed the mosaics with BAL Max Flex Fibre tile adhesive and has grouted the bear with BAL Micromax2 Ebony donated by the company.

Sweet William Bear will be displayed in front of Birmingham Cathedral from July 11th as part of an art trail throughout the city. Each bear will be sold off in a charity auction in the autumn to raise money for the children’s hospital.

The Big Sleuth follows on from The Big Hoot in 2015, where 85 large owl sculptures were auctioned off, raising more than £5 million for the hospital.

Caroline said: “The mosaic features ceramic tiles, porcelain and broken vintage crockery and draws inspiration from Shakespeare’s love of flowers used in his plays and sonnets. The Sweet William flower is said to been named after the Bard himself! A fitting name for a flora related bear! I have I have been using BAL Max Flex Fibre which has been wonderful to use and BAL Micromax2 Ebony grout. The texture, durability and true black finish of the grout is perfect to complete the project.

“I am hoping that Sweet William will have a real “wow” factor, especially as it is located in front of Birmingham Cathedral.

Strongman Steven flexes with BAL

26 year-old Steven from Blackpool is currently preparing for the Monsters Ball Strongman Competition in August.

Steven will compete in iconic strongman events such as the Atlas Stones, Log Lift and Tyre Flips against strongmen from across the UK.

Steven, who is also living with Ulcerative Colitis – a chronic condition causing inflammation of the colon – has been hard in training lifting 120kg logs, flipping 400kg tyres and bench pressing 200kg as he aims to eventually join the senior men in competition.

BAL are supporting Steven with branded training and competition gear which he will wear at the events he is taking part in throughout the year.

Steven said: “I’m a BAL Partner through BAL’s YOU+BAL programme and always use BAL gear on jobs, so I thought it would be great to promote BAL at strongman events across the UK.

BAL helps mosaic artist transform school hall

BAL have helped mosaic artist Tamara Froud transform a primary school dining hall with installations designed by pupils and taking inspiration from the school’s values.

A fixing solution of BAL adhesive and grout provided Tamara with the perfect materials to permanently fix ornate Cinca ceramic mosaics to a 6-sided, T-shaped concrete pillar at Richard Alibon Primary School in Dagenham, Essex.

Tamara was commissioned by the school to work with pupils to create designs based on the school’s values of confidence, perseverance, ambition, curiosity, respect and happiness. She visited the school to lead a design day before creating the final design – based extensively on the children’s drawings – at her studio in Catford, South London.

Tamara then returned to the school for two weeks of learning workshops where she worked with the students and taught them the basics of mosaic tiling so they could be involved in the fabrication of the mosaic. She completed the project during the school holidays.

During the installation, Tamara used BAL Max Flex Fibre tile adhesive to fix the mosaic tiles onto a mesh background. Max Flex Fibre is highly flexible and is enhanced with Fibre Strand Technology meaning it withstands movement, plus its extended open time allows for larger areas to be fixed in one mix – perfect for large mosaic installations. The project was completed with BAL Micromax2 grout which provides a smooth and clean finish with protection against efflorescence to minimise the risk of discolouration. Tamara used the BAL products after attending at Mosaic Tiling training course at BAL’s Innovation and Technology Centre (ITC) in Stoke-on-Trent organised by the British Association for Modern Mosaic (BAMM).

“As a member of the BAMM committee I’ve always wanted to push training to help standardise best practice amongst our members, so teaming up with BAL for specialist training has been a real boost,” said Tamara.

“It’s up to all mosaic artists to be fully versed on the correct preparation and installation techniques. What we don’t want are installations to be falling off walls and giving our art a bad reputation. Training courses like those provided by BAL are great for mosaic artists and benefit everyone.”

Win a van competition winner announced

Dundee-based tiler Gordon Mitchell has taken delivery of his new van after winning Ceramic Tile Distributors (CTD) and BAL’s Win a Van Competition.

The 60-year-old is a regular customer at CTD’s Dundee branch and started tiling 40 years ago after completing a four-year tiling apprenticeship.

Gordon and his team of fixers work throughout Tayside and Fife primarily with housebuilders on new build developments and is a regular user of BAL tile adhesives and grouts.

He said: “I’m a big fan of BAL and have been using them for a long as I can remember. I use BAL Rapidset Flexible and BAL Superflex grouts – and I’ve never experienced a problem, it’s always good gear.

The new RIBA-approved CPD seminar – which was successfully delivered at this year’s Surface Design Show – provides architects, specifiers and contractors with an overview of external tiled living spaces, how to ensure perfect lifelong installations and comparison of available assemblies and system design.

The trend for outdoor living has led to a growth in domestic markets for external tiles on balconies, large roof/ground floor terraces and patios.

When specified with the correct tiling systems, all types of tile installations are possible for outdoor use including ceramics, porcelain, some natural stone and pavers.

With the right products and systems, these long-lasting balconies and terraces can be designed and installed for all year round enjoyment.

BAL’s new CPD seminar provides specifiers with a comprehensive technical overview on avoiding potential issues including cracked tiles, frost damage, efflorescence and moisture staining – all caused by inadequate drainage of the tiles surface.

Homeowners looking for a tiler can select up to three local fixers on the search facility and ask them to quote directly for the job using the online form. The homeowner can then select the best quote, with each fixer notified whether they’ve won or lost the job.

BAL Partners can also collect reviews, with customers leaving their feedback online and rating the tiler using a five star system. These are then published on each tiler’s web profile (subject to approval by BAL).

To encourage homeowners to review their tiler, BAL is also giving them the chance to win back the cost of their tiling work (paid for by BAL) every month by simply submitting their review through the web or the Homeowner Tiler Review form available to all BAL Partners. The winner is simply picked at random from all the reviews submitted that month.

BAL & YTC support literacy charity

BAL have provided a range of products to support the development of a new facility in Rotherham for Grimm & Co, a worldwide charity which aims to get children excited about literacy.

The Rotherham outlet is the first for the charity in the UK outside London. Each store boasts a different concept to inspire the imagination of children, which they then take back with them into school.

The theme for the Rotherham facility focuses around “Master Graham Grimm”, a straight talking Yorkshireman who runs a thriving apothecary, supplying unnatural products and sought after services to magical beings. Jeremy Dyson, a writer and director best known as the non performing member of comedy group The League of Gentlemen is one of the charity ambassadors and has helped write the concept story.

Grimm & Co can be visited by children throughout South Yorkshire, with school classes able to take a workshop where they enter a magical apothecary, learn all about Master Grimm and are then encouraged to write about what they discover.

The charity is reliant upon donations but is also supplemented by an in house apothecary which not only makes a great background to the story but is somewhere you can buy bath salts but not as you know them, they may be called “pinch of happiness” for instance or “made from unicorns”.

The Yorkshire Tile Company, which has branches in Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and Doncaster, supplied tiles for the potting shed (girls toilets), the tool shed (boys toilets) and also for the large writers room.

The concept here is that people do their best thinking on the toilet so the writing room has been given a toilet theme, complete with graffiti toilet doors made into desks, seating made out of toilet seats and completed with other quirky styling to finish the look.

Yorkshire Tile have donated more than 40m2 of tiles, with BAL supplying BAL Supercover Rapidset and BAL Green Star tile adhesive, BAL Micromax2 Smoke grout, and BAL Rapid-Mat uncoupling mat.

Cheshire mansion transformed with BAL tiling solutions

Shortlisted for the The Tile Association (TTA) Awards 2016 for Best Use of Tile in a Domestic Environment category, the project was completed over a six-month period by Dave Stott from Elite Tiling Ltd.

The high-spec property is a fantastic example of modern tiling, including the creation of a stunning mosaic wet room and bathroom that was previously an unused attic space and a complex hexagonal patterned tiling installation in one of the en-suite renovations.

BAL tile adhesives, grouts, sealants and preparation products were specified throughout the project which included a family bathroom, and four ensuites, including master ensuite and guest ensuite, each with their own unique patterns and styles helping to create a stunning property in the Cheshire countryside.

BAL worked extensively with Dave Stott including specification support from BAL’s Technical Advisory Service (TAS) and on-site support from BAL’s expert Product Support Technicians.

“BAL were absolutely brilliant from start to finish, visiting the site to assist with product specification and technical advice,” said Dave.

“I have always used BAL as they never let me down. This was a prestigious, high-value project, so I instantly turned to BAL to provide a high quality, value-for-money fixing solution that I know will last the test of time.”

Fixed with BAL Supercover Rapidset Flexible, BAL Single Part Flexible and grouted with BAL Micromax2 Gunmetal, the stunning 29m2 family bathroom features stunning 300 x 600mm Purestone Grigio Natural Rectified Porcelain tiles fixed in a brick bond pattern on both walls and floors.

The area around the bath and shower area was tiled with textured Purestone Grigio Muretto 3D Décor tiles fixed with BAL Single Part Flexible. Not only do the textured tiles provide a stunning finish to the bathroom, they also deliver longevity, protecting against damage, wear and tear.

Situated at the front of the house, the 14m2 Ensuite 1 features striking 266 x 230mm hexagonal tiles (Alchimia Mix 1 Bianco Grigio and Alchimia Esagono Bianco) for the walls, floors and shower area.

Before tiling commenced, the floor was primed with BAL Bond SBR, Wedi boards at 6mm were installed and under floor heating mat laid and covered with BAL Fibrebase levelling compound, before the tiles were set-out and fixed.

Without doubt the biggest challenge of the room was the setting out of the walls to ensure perfect symmetry of the room – including intricate internal cuts to ensure the correct pattern and size continued around corner with perfection. The finished walls and floors were grouted with BAL Micromax2 Gunmetal and sealed with matching silicone.

Ensuite 2 is tiled with large format ceramic tiles (Modern Colour White and Modern Colour Silver) in brick bond pattern on the walls and glazed porcelain on the floor fixed with BAL Single Part Flexible and BAL Supercover Rapidset. Featuring a number of intricate recesses, the bathroom was also finished with BAL Micromax2 in Gunmetal and colour-matched BAL Micromax Sealant for consistency of colour and tone.

Tiled with stunning book-matched marble by Isaac Davila from Rockford, Fior di Bosco and Rosa Auria Extra, the 22m2 master ensuite is an ode to high quality tiling.

Fixed with BAL Single Part Flexible on the walls and BAL Supercover Rapid Set on the floors, the ensuite features a walk-in shower with a brown marble book-matched seat and recess.

A converted attic space used to accommodate guests, the Guest Ensuite is surely the property’s pièce de résistance. After extensive and exhaustive preparation work including the cladding of the entire room with tile backer-board and double scratch-coats, the room was tiled with 5mm x 25mm Stone Glass Mix White mosaic tiles which curved around the upper radius of the room, and Petrified Tree White Lion Core Natural Porcelain Tiles fixed with BAL Supercover Rapidset and grouted in a brick bond pattern on the walls to complete a simply stunning wetroom.

BAL launches new and improved Easypoxy AG

BAL have launched a new and improved formulation of its hygienic waterproof BAL Easypoxy AG epoxy adhesive and grout for walls and floors.

Chemical-resistant and solvent free, the new formulation provides end users with an epoxy that is much easier to mix, apply and clean-off during installations.

Now available in white, black and grey, BAL Easypoxy AG has an excellent set time of only 12 hours, compared to 24 hours with the previous formulation.

What’s more, the new formulation has an extended pot life of 45 minutes, giving users more time to mix and apply.

The exhibition, which was held from 9-11 February at the Business Design Centre in Islington, attracted more than 6,000 industry professional and trade visitors to compare and specify the latest products in internal and external surfacing and architectural design.

Launching to the market this Spring, the Gutjahr system technology from BAL specialises in drainage, ventilating and uncoupling solutions for balconies, patios, terraces and on facades and interiors.

BAL expands specification support team with two appointments

Alan Thurston and Tracey Hopkins will work with architects, designers and specifiers supporting them on M40/M20 specifications, providing project support and delivering RIBA-accredited CPDs.

Tracey will deliver support in North West and South West London while Alan will work with clients in the Midlands.

Building Adhesives Ltd, which specialises in the development and manufacture of tiling and decorating products, was named as a finalist in The Manufacturer MX Awards 2015, sponsored by the Natwest.

The national awards, run by The Manufacturer magazine and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, celebrated the best in manufacturing excellence across all industries within the UK at a special awards ceremony at The ICC in Birmingham in November.

To be shortlisted, Building Adhesives had to demonstrate a company-wide commitment and proven business case for sustainability.

Judges considered how the business has a sustainable approach to improve commercial performance, competitiveness, employee engagement, and customer and supplier perception. Judges also looked for innovative practices, future sustainability plans and a commitment to reducing its impact on the environment.

BAL strengthens unique support network

Nearly 3,000 indigenous villagers and 80,000 trees in the Peruvian rainforest have been protected thanks to a partnership between BAL and Cool Earth – Europe’s fastest growing environmental charity.

Cool Earth works with villagers in South America to prevent rainforests from being cut down. Funding a local trust, Cool Earth makes the local community the legal custodians of the land, and uses community rangers and satellite imagery to monitor and protect the rainforest 24/7 from illegal activity.

Supported by celebrities such as Vivienne Westwood, Ricky Gervais, and Kate Moss, and backed by leading environmentalist such as Sir David Attenborough and Sir Nicholas Stern, the charity institutes sustainable employment programmes, and supports schools and clinics, so that indigenous rainforest communities do not suffer from lost logging income.

As part of its partnership with Cool Earth, BAL funds the protection of one square metre of rainforest in for every square metre of BAL’s tile adhesive range used.

Since partnering with Cool Earth, BAL has helped protect 333 acres and 79,920 trees – locking in 86,580 tonnes of CO2 that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere contributing to global warming and climate change.

Recently opened, Huddersfield Leisure Centre features a range of top sporting and leisure facilities, including a 25m competition pool, 20m training pool with moveable floor and a family leisure pool with interactive water features, water flume and sidewinder.

What’s more, visitors can enjoy squash courts, a 15m climbing wall, bouldering wall, twelve court sports hall, large gym, cycle studio and combat room.

The centre also features changing facilities, offices, meeting rooms and a large café.

The new centre was designed to meet the clients brief for a multi-purpose sporting and leisure facility for the local community which compliments the existing street pattern and contributes to the regeneration of the town and surrounding region.

BAL tile adhesives, grouts, sealants and preparation products were all specified for the project which featured more than 10,000m² of tiling in the main changing rooms, upstairs changing rooms, pool surround, leisure pool and main swimming pools.

BAL worked extensively with project architects AHR, main contractors BAM, tiling contractors The Tiling Company and tile suppliers Ceramique Internationale Ltd from design to completion, including specification support from BAL’s Technical Advisory Service (TAS) and on-site support from BAL’s expert Product Support Technicians.

BAL products used at Huddersfield Leisure Centre included numerous preparation products such as BAL Quickset Cement, BAL Quickset Render, BAL Prime APD and BAL Bond SBR (acrylic primer for walls and floors, bonding agent for walls and floors respectively).

A number of different tile adhesives were utilised throughout the project including BAL Single Part Flexible (flexible adhesive), BAL Supercover Rapid Flexible (fast-setting, high yield tile adhesive), BAL Rapidset Flexible (fast-setting flexible adhesive) and BAL Max Flex Fibre (flexible, fibre-reinforced adhesive).

The stunning tiling work was completed with grouts including BAL Microflex White, BAL Superflex White, BAL Superflex Wide Joint in Grey, White and Limestone, BAL Grout White and BAL Easypoxy White. Prestigious award for BAL training manager

BAL Training Manager Dave Rowley has been recognised with a prestigious industry award for playing a vital contribution to the development of skills and knowledge throughout the tiling industry.

Dave, who joined BAL in 1992 after completing an apprenticeship in wall and floor tiling, was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Industry award at The Tile Association Awards 2015.

Alex Underwood, Head of Marketing, said: “Dave has been instrumental in helping to raise standards across the industry, developing and delivering modular introductory courses for new people entering the industry as well as structured and bespoke training courses on advanced techniques and product knowledge.

“Since joining BAL, Dave has personally trained in the region of 10,000 people, helping to position BAL as the leading manufacturer for training excellence. Most recently he was at the forefront of the development of the company’s new state-of-the-art Innovation and Technology Centre which provides outstanding facilities to deliver innovative training courses for distributors, retailers, contractors, specifiers and tilers.”

Over many years Dave has developed and updated NVQs/SVQs and EWPAR qualifications and is a qualified assessor and internal verifier in wall and floor tiling. He also works with colleges and independent training providers to oversee product training in line with qualification structures.

Since 2009 Dave has been the lead judge for the national SkillBuild finals for wall and floor tiling. Organised by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board), SkillBuild provides an important showcase for trainees, and helps to improve workmanship and increase standards across the industry.

Dave is an active member of the TTA Fixer Training Committee and is Chairman of the TTA Supply Chain Committee where is currently involved in a new initiative to standardise training for the supply chain, with a pilot project set to being in the near future.

On receiving his award Dave said: “I am extremely passionate about training, which I believe is vital to the continued success of the company and the tiling industry in general.

“Maintaining high standards and fixing techniques helps to prevent poor practices and incorrect specifications which can have a negative impact for all in the industry including manufacturers, distributors, specifiers, contractors and fixers.

“At BAL training is a key priority, which is why we have invested in our high spec Innovation and Technology Centre to give everyone in the industry the opportunity to learn about the latest technologies and installation practices to enhance their skills.”

The slimness also makes it ideal for laying over existing tiling, as it offers a minimal increase in floor height.

BAL launches new training courses at newly opened centre

BAL, the market leader in tile adhesives, grouts and ancillary products, has launched a host of new training courses at its newly opened Innovation and Technology Centre in Stoke-on-Trent.

A range of practical and theoretical day courses are available, led by Dave Rowley, BAL Training Manager and members of BAL Technical Advisory Service.

“Training is a key priority at BAL, and we believe it is pivotal for everyone in the industry  – professional fixers, contractors,  retail and distribution staff, specifiers and students – to have the opportunity to learn about our the latest technologies and installation practices to  enhance their skills,” commented Mr Rowley.

“All training takes place at our state-of-the-art Innovation and Technology Centre with its practical training bays, demonstration auditorium and conference rooms providing the perfect training facility for all our courses.”

Fixers and installers can take advantage of a number of courses, whether they are new to the trade, at college, or have many years’ experience.

Courses include:

BAL breaks new ground with launch of high spec training centre

A state-of-the art £300,000 Innovation and Technology Centre (ITC) has been officially opened by the leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council Councillor Mohammad Pervez at Building Adhesives Ltd in Trentham.

Councillor Pervez opened the Centre alongside the Company’s Managing Director Peter Bell at a special launch event on March 11th.

Founded in 1963, Building Adhesives Ltd is the market leader in the development, manufacture and distribution of tile adhesives, grouts, sealants, and associated building products through its BAL and DUNLOP brands.

Revolutionising training in the tiling sector, the purpose-built ITC delivers a significant upgrade on the firm’s current BAL Training Academy and features a state-of-the-art demonstration auditorium, practical training bays and meeting rooms.

Providing the perfect platform for training in tiling techniques, skills and product use, the multi-use venue is available to a range of people in the tiling and construction industries including apprentices, installers, architects, specifiers, distributors, retailers and colleges.

BAL supports SkillBuild finals

BAL has continued to support SkillBuild – the UK’s biggest construction skills competition – in its most successful competition to date.

SkillBuild is now in its third year and is run by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board). The competition sees the very best students from Regional Heats compete in ten construction occupations, including tiling, to be crowned the overall SkillBuild winner in their chosen trade.

The SkillBuild 2014 National Final was held in front of more than 74,000 people at The Skills Show 2014 at Birmingham’s NEC from 13 to 15 November.

Competitors were judged on their tiling techniques and ability over the three-day event, which saw students being set tiling challenges including a complex design incorporating the Brazilian flag and a visual depiction of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio De Janeiro statue.

BAL provided materials and sponsored the 3rd place prize, while Dave Rowley, BAL Training Manager, acted as Lead Judge at both the Finals and the 8 Regional Heats throughout the year.

Winner of the overall wall and floor tiling competition was Armondas Tamulis from Southern Regional College in Northern Ireland, with Malcolm Worley from St Helens College taking home the silver medal and Paul Walker, a tiling student from Cardiff and Vale College, who won the bronze medal.

Armondas and Malcolm will now go onto the International Shortlist and compete for a chance to represent Squad UK at the WorldSkills competition in Abu Dhabi in 2017. Unfortunately Paul is above the age threshold to represent the UK at WorldSkills.

Les Inkpen, SkillBuild Project Manager, commented: “The standard at the event was extremely high, with many talented tilers proving that the future of the profession is in good hands.

“Armondas, Malcolm and Paul proved worthy medallists, with their tiling skills being rated significantly higher than the scoring threshold to represent the UK at WorldSkills.

“We had nearly 100 tilers enter the competition at the Regional Level , which is a significant increase from a few years’ ago, however  we are always looking to boost the number of competitors.

“ I would like to thank BAL for their support over the years, and it is fantastic that they are involved again this year.”

BAL has sponsored regional and national SkillBuild tiling competitions since 2009, while Dave Rowley has acted as Lead Judge since 2003.

Building Adhesives Ltd have been recognised for business excellence by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as part of their Manufacturing Excellence Awards (MX). MX is a business improvement and awards programme designed to support and promote UK manufacturers in ensuring industry productivity and worldwide competitiveness. Building Adhesives Ltd were shortlisted in the first ever Regional MX Awards, as ImechE cited Building Adhesives for, “various business improvements and introducing a programme to improve working relationships.”

Building Adhesives entered the MX Awards as a means of assessing its performance in comparison with the best manufacturing organisations. The aim was to identify best practice and, where appropriate, change its operating methods to compete with the very best UK companies.
